Yesterday was my birthday.

Alun hates birthdays but made a big effort to make mine special, bless him. I woke up to pink balloons in the living room and 3 birthday cards from Alun! Three!!! Each one felt heavy. He’d put scratchie tickets in all of them and $200 in the main card.

I’m sooo spoilt!

^^ I legally changed my name to JANET Daniels-Thomas this year, so Alun got me a “1st birthday card” because it’s my first one as Janet. I’m super psyched about it! Yaaaaass!!!

We got up early, had breakfast and packed for one night’s stay at ‘Seashells Resort’ in the seaside city of Mandurah – about an hour’s drive from the city.

Mandurah is basically our Western Australian version of Venice:

There are 6 “hidden Giants” that are incredible art installations by some guy (lol I can’t remember his name, oops!). They’re “giants” made from wood. The advertisement says they’re hidden throughout Mandurah so I envisioned walking around the city of Mandurah, casually finding the Giants.

I was so wrong.

The 1st stop was to go to the visitor centre and get a special map with hints at where the Giants were hidden. I saw a place to hire eScooters and was so excited. I dragged Alun over (he hates them because as a Nurse, he sees so many people badly injured when riding them) to hire one each for an hour.

An hour will be plenty of time I thought.

Nope.

As the eScooter lady was giving us instructions and helmets, she was saying it would probably take a beginner (at this, she looked at me! Hahaha) over an hour to get to the first Giant and back. There wouldn’t be time to find 2 in the hour. I was so surprised by that!

Undeterred, I insisted Alun and I try anyway. Alun chuckled and strapped his helmet on “Ok, let’s go birthday girl”.

10 minutes later and Alun and I were on a random street corner, frowning at the map and wondering where WE were and how to get to the “x” the saleslady had marked on a spot really far away from the town centre.

“I say we give up the hunt for giants and just zoom around town, checking it out – you in?”

I was.

We folded the map and I put it in my bag. We pushed off on our eScooters and whizzed around the town centre instead.

Best. Decision. Ever.

We saw cute cafes, surf/beachy stores, beautiful homes, gorgeous pubs and loads of water! Haha. The Marina is stunning.

We stopped at a pretty tavern for drinks:

Drinks by the sea xx

We were able to return our eScooters on time (Alun is very punctual whereas I’ll keep Library books for years after they’re due back), and checked into our apartment at Seashells Resort:

To be right on the beach front was next level.

We left our bags in the room and took off hand in hand to see more of Mandurah. It was so great to walk around in the sun and enjoy each other’s company.

I still wanted to see a Giant though, so we headed back to the car and put the address into Google maps.

It was really far away. There is no way we would have made it on scooters!

Here is the 1 Giant we saw. I loved the sight of him with his kind face and huge hands in the air, as if he’s praising God:

We ended the day with crab linguine and garlic bread at a gorgeous by right on the Marina. We just shared the meal and were glad we did because it was huge! Haha. So tasty, though:

Alun and I walked back to the Resort and sat our by the infinity pool (right on the beach) and watched the sun set. A wonderful end to a really great day:

Ahhhh. This is living!

So. I’m grateful for a happy, healthy birthday filled with loving messages ALL DAY from all my mates, from Mom, from my bonus parents Lyn and Pete, from my work mates – even from my bosses. I got beautiful cards and gifts and ultimately got to spend the day with my favourite person.

I’m so blessed and I had a great day.

Thank you, Abba Father xx

My friend at work sent me a photo of my desk – with cards and gifts waiting when I got back as I’d taken the day off. Lucky me!
Gerberas from my friends. I love them!
A birthday card and birthday money from Alun’s parents, bless them.

What a nice day you had. 46??! I guessed around 30. Hmmm. Fairly curious about the whole name change thing.

Thank you so much, Jeff! Haha Alun and I are told all the time that we look 10 years younger than we are. Probably all the mischief we get up to!

My Mom named me “Jan”, my biological father left us both before I was born. My name started out as “Jan Hoback”. Puke. My Dad came along and married Mom when I was 3. He didn’t adopt me, but he changed my surname to his. I became “Jan Daniels”. Hated it. I’ve called myself “Janet” since I was about 11 because I liked it so much. I didn’t do anything about it legally. I got married at 25 and became “Jan Hill”. Got divorced. Got re-married at 36. Didn’t change my name. Alun hated that people called me “Mrs Hill”. I lost my Dad in 2021. Because of this, I wanted to legally change my name and keep “Daniels” in it so I’d always be part of my Dad. I did the paperwork and paid loads and now I’m legally “Janet Daniels-Thomas” – the 1st name I chose for myself all those years ago…and a new surname that puts my Dad’s surname next to Alun’s. When I showed Alun my name change certificate he burst into delighted tears “I love your name”. It made my Mom cry happy tears too because of Dad…so it means a lot to myself and those closest to me 🙂 😀

Happy Belated Birthday! I KNOW you had a great one! What fantastic photos you took! And that giant…….? Just beautiful! I was hoping you had taken photos of all of them.
Mandurah is gorgeous. It definitely looks like a version of Venice.
I would ask if Alun has a brother, but I’m 65 and am not marriage material, never was. When you found Alun you found gold.

Hi Kelly! Yes, I was hoping to find ALL 6 Giants and upload photos of all of them, but it turns out – they’re HOURS apart from each other. Al and I would need AT LEAST 12 hours and a car filled with petrol to find them all. Photos of some of the Giants are on Instagram so I’ll copy and upload them for you at some point so you can see what they look like.

At 65 you’re not too old and it’s not too late, beautiful lady. If you want to find someone to marry, I say do it. I’ll be cheering you on all the way. If you’re happy staying single, then do that 😀 I’ll be here for you no matter what.

You’re right about Alun, he’s a treasure. He’s also a cheeky monkey, infuriating and stubborn…but for the most part, he’s joyful, caring and very thoughtful so I’m really blessed. I’m no picnic either 😂 hahaha.

You found quite a man in your cheeky monkey imp!
I’m not saying 65 is old, it’s just that I much prefer being single. I’ve had my fill of boyfriends in my younger years. Now, I don’t have the patience. No man for me, thank you!
Thanks again for doing the search online for those amazing giants!

First off,,,,, Happy Birthday to you!! The day you and Alun had looks like you had a ton of fun.

I am also glad that your moms injury was not worse and I am hopeful that she is safely on the mend.

Hey there Tommy! I love that you’re taking a break and doing other things – sometimes we need that as writers; to just step away for a bit. I hope you’re catching up on doing things you love.

Thank you so much for reading and responding to my posts, it means a great deal to hear from you. Haha yes, Al and I had so much fun, bless us. We have little kids in our hearts and the little kid in Al’s heart is besties with the little kid in mine – and hey, pronto – we’re on eScooters and laughing away together all afternoon.

I’m thankful my Mom’s okay, too. Thank you for commenting on that, it was such a scary time.

I’m looking forward to you coming back and hope you’ll write something again soon. I love your blog, Tommy.

Sending you and Dawn big hugs xxxx
