I made my first ever $10.25USD as a writer :)

I saw on a fellow blogger’s site that she had made over $1000USD on a site called “Mediumwhere her blogs earnt money.

The 5-year-old that lives in my heart was all “Yaaaasss!!! MONEEEEEEEYYYY” so of course, I joined.

There’s a $5.00 a month membership fee and it’s definitely a different world to WordPress – it’s a jungle out there, writers! Because it’s monetised, the competition is FIERCE! You have to be at the top of your game to get a reader to click on your article, to read it and to ‘clap’ for it. Clapping on Medium is not like “liking” something -it’s actually a rating system. If someone really likes your article, they’ll clap 50 times for it. If someone reads it and isn’t impressed, they might leave ONE clap and a comment with feedback.

Apparently the way to ‘stand out’ above other writers is to be published on the many Medium online publications – like magazines.

Praise God, I’ve been published in 3 different publications and an article I wrote on survival tactics for a toxic office gained 800 reads, over 300 ‘fans’ and about 1000 claps. That’s where the deposit for $10.25USD came from in my bank account.

Go me.

Haha.

Only $999.00USD to go, eh?

Seeing the caliber of the other articles online and that other writers have ‘fans’/’followers’ in droves – like 70,000 – 250,000 each – where in a month, I’ve amassed a grand total of about 400 – makes me feel discouraged in a way. I am a tiny fish in a huge ocean of much prettier, smarter fish.

I have so far to go.

But I’m determined to make it on Medium. I’m learning a lot while I’m there and even though I basically earned enough to pay my month’s membership and buy a hot chocolate or a cookie at the cafeteria next door, I will still consider it a win! I’m a paid writer, guys! This is awesome!

Having to write news-worthy articles rather than just literally have an online journal/diary like I do here in WordPress (I love just being able to TALK to you guys about anything I’m going through) makes me more aware of my spelling, sentence structure, paragraphs, “catchy headlines” and sticking to a word count.

It’s re-framed the way I look at writing for a larger audience and has made me want to make a lot of changes to my Memoir.

It spins me out how being a writer is such a journey.

As writers, we are constantly observing, writing, recording, trying, failing and growing. It’s hard work (OMG it is hard!!!) but I think when we get someone responding to our posts (thank you to Tommy, Shanti, Ellie, Sara, Mykl, Catwoman, 1927Lady, Marquessa and so many others who are thoughtful and leave responses here) then it’s a huge high. It makes all the hard work worth it to reach a ‘reader’ who says “Hey, I really liked your article – great job”. I find SO MUCH JOY in connecting to someone.

Here’s to the next $10.00!!!

  1. I wish you all the luck in the world! Always remember, your worth as a writer is based in your enjoyment of it, not whether a wide audience chooses to participate.

    1. Aww Marla, thank you so much!!! Yes, I think if we write purely to make money, we’ll end up miserable. If we write because we LOVE it (and you and I both do, bless us), then we don’t measure ourselves by the ‘likes’ we get, we do it for the joy it brings to us xx

      1. Precisely!! I’ve seen quite a few people love something artistic, like writing, and derive much pleasure from it. Then, they get the idea “I can make money for my art!” They then get excited about every penny they’ve earned on it, shocked that anyone would be interested at all. Then suddenly they forget that they wanted to try to make a few pennies doing something they loved and it becomes something that suffocates them. Just remember, you’re an amazing person, your worth is not valued based on how many words you write and how much you make from it. All that shows is that luck was on your side for that day/week/month/year, and that as long as you enjoy it, you might as well keep going because an extra $10 is never a bad thing, but it isn’t the ONLY thing either.

  2. That’s great! I started writing blogs since June of last year and I created my own podcast called The Wright Info Podcast Show.

    1. Yaaaaass!!! Now I have a friend I can talk to about writing on Medium!!! So excited!!! I’m on there as Janet Hill. Are you there as Tommy T? When you post an article, I’ll jump on to support you. I’ve got you, my friend xx

      1. Try looking for Tom (tommy) Thompson. I have not posted yet. My plan was to really get through Bloganuary, learn and then begin writing on Medium with different content than on my “work” blog. I really enjoy the content I created last month but it is more personal, deep, and philosophical than I may create on for my blog on WordPress. I looked and saw another Janet Hill but she has a rent rate blog.

      2. Ooo ok. I will look for you and “follow” so that when you post, I’ll be first in line to cheer you on! I have LOVED your bloganuary answers and look forward to more of those! Keep them coming, you’re an awesome writer. Will your Medium be more work-based?

      3. It will not. I am not sure what it will ultimately become, that is going to be the journey and the feedback from others and my enjoyment in one area or another will help to guide me. At least that is my thinking. HAHA

      4. I’m excited for your journey and stoked (Aussie for excited/happy) to have a friend to talk about writing on Medium with. This is awesome! Whatever you end up writing, I already know it’s gonna be awesome.

      5. Same, I am looking forward to working through this together. FYI, we use stocked here too. Perhaps it traveled to us from y’all over there.

      6. Ooo interesting! Maybe we got it off you guys? I’ve heard Americans say they’re “Pumped” which I thought was your version of “Stoked” but if we both use it, then that’s awesome too. I wonder who came up with it first?

      7. I have also heard jazzed too. I am sure there are many more and it is cool to see that there are some that have stood the test of time and there are some that are more generational.

      8. I looked and couldn’t find you. Maybe it will be easier once you post? I thought I’d set up my account as Janet Hill but nope! I’m there as Janet Daniels-Thomas 😊 hahaha not a good start when I don’t know my own bloody name!

  6. Well done you, Janet! That’s fantastic. I’m so happy for you that you’ve started to write on Medium and even earned a few pennies from doing so. Great news! I admire your courage and ability to write for Medium. I have an account/profile there, but I haven’t written anything there yet, and I don’t seem to be able to pluck up the courage to do so. Everyone there seems to be a top-quality writer. I found your name from the details you gave in your reply to Tommy T. (above). I hope you don’t mind. I am now following you, although I will have to subscribe to be able to read anything, so I am giving that some careful thought as money is tight for me currently. I’m also wondering if you can publish on Medium if it’s something you’ve previously posted here at WordPress. I’d be hard-pushed to write two different posts regularly in both places. I hope you treat yourself to something nice with your $10 – you deserve the reward. Many congratulations again, Janet. (*I’m clapping for you as they do on Medium*) Xx πŸ˜ŠπŸ’πŸ’

    1. You are such a HUGE BLESSING and a ray of sunshine in my life, Ellie. Thank you so much for commenting and for your support in following me. I will have to find you on my Medium followers list and follow you back! I’ve got you, girl.

I find it hard posting different things on WordPress than I do on Medium. From the many articles I’ve read on Medium, writers need to present a relatable problem – and a list of solutions. I’m used to just complaining on WordPress – so finding solutions and putting them in list order has been quite the challenge.

I think there would be a way to post the same blog on both sites, it would just depend on the response you get on Medium.

You, my friend – ARE AMAZING at writing and your poems would get a lot of positive feedback, I think. You write with your heart and that’s so appealing to so many of us.
